Fana Bulandshahri, born Hanif Muhammad in 1912, was a highly influential Sufi and romantic poet whose work left an indelible mark on South Asian literature and music. Later associated with Gujranwala, Pakistan, he perfected his craft as a direct disciple of the eminent Ustad Qamar Jalalvi. Though he personally preferred a life of quiet modesty away from the limelight, his poetry achieved monumental global success. He is the creative genius behind immortal qawwalis popularized by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, including the legendary Mere Rashk-e-Qamar, Kali Kali Zulfon Ke Phande Na Dalo, and Aankh Utthi Mohabbat Ne Angdai Li. Fana's poetry beautifully balances classical ghazal traditions with profound spiritual longing, passing away in November 1986 but leaving behind a timeless legacy.
